Some days a cat wakes up sad. This cat doesn’t use catnip to change her mood, so, when it happens to me, I try to focus on my purpose, not my problem.
What is my purpose, you might ask? It’s being of maximum service to The Big Cat In The Sky and my fellow creatures. When I place my attention on what I can put into the stream of life, instead of what I can snatch out, it changes my focus.
My first thought is usually of myself; “How does this affect me? How does this make me feel? How can I control this?” Me, me, me. Self focus usually leads me to depression and anxiety. What’s a cat to do? I’m glad you asked. :)
I might curl up on my human’s lap and give her some soothing “Purr-time” if she looks a little anxious. Or I “groom” her hand when she’s down. Kneading biscuits on her belly usually cheers her up, too.
Cats might seem completely selfish to the untrained eye, but my subtle love has changed my human’s life and helped her through some really tough times.
What do I get out of it? Getting out of “self” helps me take the attention off of the crazy mouse running circles on the wheel between my ears. It brings me serenity. What I concentrate on expands. If I focus on loving the person in front of me, the Love doesn’t just grow in their world, it magnifies in mine.
Thanks for listening and keep it real dog,
Your feline friend,
Barbara
